ROMNEY – A new running club is hitting the ground running in Hampshire County by hosting the inaugural Turkey Day 2-mile run/walk on Thanksgiving Day morning, Nov. 24, in Romney. I’m the executive director of the Mountain Maryland Marathon Club. Beginning Jan. 1, 2012, the club will be renamed to reflect to nonprofit group’s new Hampshire County location.
The Thanksgiving Day walk will be an out-and-back event on Foxes Hollow Road just a couple miles west of Romney. You can confirm your plans to attend, ask questions or invite others by way of the event’s Facebook page.
Motorists in Cumberland are only about 40 minutes away from Romney; 65 minutes from Oakland; 30 minutes from Keyser; 20 minutes from Capon Bridge; and 50 minutes from Winchester. It’s likely you’ll pay less in fuel and entry fee here, combined, than your normal $20 5K entry fee somewhere closer.
The Mountain Maryland Marathon Club is hosting the event. As the year ends and 2012 begins, the group will be renamed and operate under the name of the Potomac Highlands Distance Club. The club is a registered nonprofit organization under the umbrella of the Road Runners Club of America and will be the only RRCA club operating in the Eastern Panhandle.
The 2-mile run/walk begins promptly at 9 a.m. Race-day registration begins at 8: 15 a.m. Specific instructions and starting line location will be available on a new blog found online at http://runreadroll.wordpress.com, but it’ll basically be across the street from the pawn shop along U.S. Route 50.
Entry for this low-key event is only $5 per participant with a cap of $20 per family or only $3 for each runner or walker who brings two cans of non-perishable food items. Those items will be donated to a local food pantry.
